Admissions

Admissions to the school are made by the Governing Body. Priority for admission will be given to:

  1. Catholic looked after children.
  2. Baptised Catholic children who live in the Parishes of St. John's, Mongeham and St. Thomas of Canterbury, Deal.
  3. Non-Catholic looked after children.
  4. When the school is oversubscribed with applicants fulfilling the requirements of paragraphs 1-3 above, then the following criteria will be applied, in the order set out below:
    1. the presence of a brother or sister at the school;
    2. medical or social grounds which make the school particularly suitable for the child in question. These will require verification by the appropriate authority such as a medical practitioner, social worker or educational welfare officer;
    3. distance from home to school, measured in a straight line;
    4. Catholic children from other parishes;
    5. Baptised Christians of other denominations and children of other religions.
  5. If there are any places unfilled after the requirements of paragraphs 1-4 above, consideration may be given to the admission of other children living in the neighbourhood, especially with some connections to the school, otherwise nearness to the school will be the criterion.
  6. Parents will be able to request a copy of the booklet 'A Primary School for your Child' and a Common Application Form from either the school or the LEA.
    A supplementary demoninational form must be completed in all cases and must be accompanied by copies of a child's birth and baptismal certificates. Parents/guardians may return completed forms to St. Mary's or to the LEA by the date specified in the booklet.
  7. Admissions of older children will be considered at any time of year, and the criteria detailed above will also apply to them.
  8. Parents have the right to appeal against any refusal by the governors to admit their child, by writing to the Clerk of the Governors at the school within 21 days of such refusal being notified to them.
  9. St. Mary's published admission number is 30 per year group.
