Class 5

12th January '10

Dear parents/carers,

Welcome back to a new term. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and I would like to wish you a happy new year. As ever, this term will be a busy one with lots of new things to learn.

I would firstly like to congratulate the children on their Victorian projects. I was very impressed with the standard of their work and how well they were presented. I did enjoy reading them all. Thank you very much for the support and guidance you provided for the children with this. I'm sure they got a lot out of it.

This term our theme is ' Journeys around the World', and our topics will have a more geographical flavour. A lot of our work will be based on the book which I will read to the class called 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo. We will be looking at various countries around the world, with the first being Brazil, and will be finding out where it is and what it is like to live there.

In Literacy we are studying narrative and will be focusing on how to improve our story writing by looking closely at style, structure and use of language. For Maths we will be continuing  work on fractions and decimals and using the four operations(addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to solve word problems. Also, we will be looking at percentages, ratio and proportion and some more shape work. In addition to this, we will be continuing with the tables challenge three times a week.

Our topics for Science will be Changes in Materials and after half term, Sound. Linked to Changes we will be making bread in DT and when we are learning about sound we will make musical instruments. For Art we will be looking at warm and cold colours and also 3d modelling with clay.

The RE topics for this term are Special People, Meals and Good and Evil, which will take us up to Easter. The RE newsletter is on the back of this letter.

As we are no longer swimming on Wednesdays, we will have PE in school instead. For this term I had planned to do football and netball, but due to circumstances beyond my control, ie. the weather, we will be having the lessons inside until the snow melts. The children will therefore need their shorts and T shirts, and when we do go outside, they will need warm clothes such as tracksuits and their trainers.

As ever, you are always welcome to come and see me if you need to discuss anything. The best time for this is after school. Let's hope that we all manage to stay warm and that we have another happy and successful term.

Yours faithfully,

Barbara Smythe
