Class 6
17th September 2009
Dear Parents & Carers,
Welcome back to you all, after what I hope, was a pleasant summer for you. Thank you for supporting your children with their reading of 'The Magician's Nephew'. It will be a great starting point for our work on 'The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe' this term. The work plans for this term are shown in the chart below. We have tried hard to make the curriculum interesting and creative for the children. The work plan covers Autumn terms 1 & 2 to allow us time to have a greater depth of study.
I think it is very important that the children challenge themselves at whatever level they are at. We will encourage all the children to read regularly at home. It is important that they learn to develop a love of it. As I am sure you will agree, it is important for their future well being, that they are confident readers. We are very lucky that in addition to Mrs Mannell, we also have some extra support in the class from Mrs Powers & Mr Norton. This means that we will be able to ensure that the children can be heard read in school whether individually or in a group. To this aim, children will be expected to review the books they read and we will monitor this through their reading records. The children will be given literacy homework every week and I would appreciate your support in making them complete it.
We will also continue with the 'Times Table Challenges' that they begun last year. It is something they enjoyed and it is so beneficial for them to know their times tables. We will be offering some extra support to some children in the form of an early morning maths group. These are very beneficial to those children who are invited because it allows them to clarify their understanding in a smaller setting. The children will also have maths homework every week.
We are very fortunate this year that Miss Rodrigues has joined the school. She is French and has taken on the role of teaching French to all the children in Key Stage 2. The children have really enjoyed the lessons they have had so far.
I do have high expectations of the children and I think it is important that they are encouraged to do their best in all they do. The 'Keep It Neat' campaign will continue this year and the children are expected to make sure that they keep themselves and their work neat.
We will use lots of ICT in lessons and it is important that we are all aware of 'E-safety'. In the next few weeks there will be leaflets and letters to sign, to ensure that we are all aware how important it is to safeguard our children in our ever changing digital world.
One of the topics we will be revisiting is World War 2 and to that end, I would appreciate your help. If you have any family members who remember the war and who would like to come and talk to the children, please get in touch. Likewise any artefacts that you may have hidden away that are from the war, would help us to start a class museum.
I am looking forward to our Roald Dahl day and as a Key Stage, we hope to have a least one themed day every old term. The children always enjoy them.
My door is always open and I will be more than happy to see you if you have any issues you wish to discuss. As I have meetings on Mondays and Tuesdays, I would ask that you refrain from coming on those days. If it is urgent though please call Mrs Clarke and I will call you back as soon as I am available.
I am really looking forward to learning with your children this year, in the short while I have been teaching them, they are a lovely class who really support each other.
