Computing & E Safety

It is essential that our pupils become digitally literate, with the ability to use and express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology, at a level that is suitable for the future workplace. Pupils need to be taught how to stay safe online. Pupils are taught through the new curriculum how digital systems work and how to use this knowledge within programming. Through this, pupils are equipped to use IT to develop programs, systems and a range of content.

The National Curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

Children at St Mary's use the internet regularly to support their learning. At school and by using the links on the school website, the children are encouraged to understand the importance of keeping themselves safe online. All the children, parents and members of staff sign an agreement that they will always abide by safe practice guidance.

The school has invested in trolleys that house I pads and laptops which the children can use in their classrooms. We have whiteboard technology and wireless access throughout the school. This results in our children leaving St Mary’s with a good degree of computer literacy.
