Term 1

Welcome to Year 5: Penguin Class!

We’re so excited to begin another busy and fun-filled year together. It’s wonderful to see the children back in school, full of energy and enthusiasm for their learning. Year 5 is always a big step forward, and the children have already settled in brilliantly. This term is off to a flying start, and we can’t wait to share all the exciting things we have planned!

📚 English – Writing

We’ve kicked off the year by focusing on the “Place Value of Punctuation”. This helps children strengthen the mechanical features of their writing while revisiting what they already know. Through lots of interactive activities and fun challenges, the children are building strong foundations that will support high-quality writing all year long.

Next, we’ll be moving on to non-chronological reports. The children will be inspired by the incredible work of Sir David Attenborough, exploring his research and combining it with their own findings from books and the internet. By the end of the unit, they’ll produce their very own reports, showcasing both their knowledge and creativity.🐧

📖 English – Reading

We are kicking off the year with our class book The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie and the children are already hooked! It’s a magical, mysterious story about a shop that only appears to those who need it, packed with endless rooms full of wonder. It’s the perfect book to get imaginations whirring and conversations flowing in class.

We’ll also be exploring a brilliant mix of texts, from the epic adventure of Shackleton’s Journey, to the fun and familiar words of Disney songs, and even some thought-provoking poetry. The aim is to give the children lots of different reading experiences so they can practise their skills while also discovering just how exciting books can be.

Maths

In Maths, we’re following the White Rose scheme and jumping straight into Place Value to get the year rolling. After that, we’ll be moving on to the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). The children are already showing great enthusiasm and determination with their learning!

We’ll also be keeping up with our daily Mathsbot challenges, a fun way to build fluency and confidence with numbers. The children were fabulous with their multiplication learning last year. Continuing to practice these at home (even just a few minutes each day) will make such a big difference, giving the children the solid foundations they need to tackle trickier maths with confidence.

🙏 RE

In RE, our first topic is “Our Family – the Domestic Church and Ourselves.” The children will be exploring what it means to belong to a family, both at home and as part of the wider church community. These lessons are always really special, as the children love sharing their own family stories and reflecting on the people who care for them.

We’ll also be looking at key scriptures linked to this theme and responding to them in creative ways including producing artwork inspired by the messages we find. This gives the children the chance to express their understanding not just through discussion, but through colour, imagination, and creativity.

🔬 Science – Materials

In Science, we’re diving into the fascinating world of materials! The children will be exploring the properties of different materials, learning how to compare them, and discovering why certain materials are used for specific purposes. Hands-on experiments are a big part of this topic, so the children will be getting stuck in, testing, investigating, and having lots of fun while learning.

This topic is all about curiosity and observation, helping children to think like scientists as they explore the world around them. It’s a great way for them to connect what they learn in class with everyday life, from the clothes we wear to the materials used to build our homes.

🎵 Music – Ukulele Lessons

This term, Year 5 are strumming into ukulele lessons, and the children are super excited! They’ll be learning the basics of playing this fun instrument, from simple chords to creating their own rhythms.

There will be plenty of opportunities for them to show off their skills, and of course, we’ll be sharing videos so you can see (and hear!) all their amazing progress. It’s a fantastic way for the children to build confidence, develop their musical skills, and enjoy making music together

DT – Electrical Systems: Doodlers!

This term in Design & Technology, Year 5 are getting hands-on with electrical systems through our Doodlers  project. The children will be exploring circuits, switches, and basic electronics as they bring their creative ideas to life.

It’s a super fun, interactive topic where they can design, build, and test their own creations, combining creativity with problem-solving. The children are already buzzing with excitement, and we can’t wait to see their inventive designs light up (literally!).

🌍 Geography – Biomes: Grammarsaurus

This term, Year 5 are going on a global adventure with our Grammarsaurus project, exploring the amazing world of biomes! From dense rainforests to icy tundras, the children will discover the plants, animals, and climates that make each habitat special.

But it’s not just about facts they’ll be investigating, comparing, and thinking like real explorers, using maps, research, and creative projects to bring these environments to life.
