Year 4 Adventures at St Mary’s: A Journey Through History, Geography, and Science!
Welcome to the world of Year 4 at St Mary’s! This year, our students embark on an exciting learning journey that takes them from ancient history to global exploration and scientific discovery, with plenty of creativity and hands-on experiences along the way. Here’s a glimpse into what makes Year 4 so special.
History
The year kicks off with an exhilarating deep dive into the Anglo-Saxon and Viking invasion of Britain. Throughout their learning, students uncover the dramatic stories of these ancient warriors, settlers, and their enduring legacy in British history. From crafting shields to role-playing village life, our classrooms are alive with the sights and sounds of this fascinating era.
The year wraps up with a journey to the sands of Ancient Egypt. This term is always a favourite, thanks to our immersive activities and dress-up day where everyone channels their inner pharaoh or archaeologist. From hieroglyphics to mummification, students are transported back in time to uncover the mysteries of one of history’s greatest civilizations.
Our Walk Like an Egyptian Day is a highlight, complete with costumes, games, and storytelling that bring history to life. Students also create their own Egyptian artifacts and delve into the science behind pyramid building and preservation techniques.
Geography:All Around the World
Year 4 becomes a hub of international exploration as students learn about diverse countries, cultures, and landscapes. From mapping continents to exploring different climates, our topics sparks curiosity about the world beyond our borders.
Our lessons go beyond the textbook, encouraging students to present research projects on countries of their choice and delve into global challenges such as conservation and climate change. With interactive activities and group projects, students work collaboratively to broaden their horizons.
Science in Year 4: Curiosity and Discovery
Science in Year 4 is all about asking questions and conducting experiments to find answers. Across the year, students explore fascinating topics such as:
- Food and Digestion: Learning how our bodies process food and the role of different nutrients.
- States of Matter: Investigating solids, liquids, and gases through fun and interactive experiments.
- Sound: Exploring how sound travels and how we hear.
- Electricity: Building simple circuits and understanding how electricity powers our world.
- Classification: Sorting and categorizing living things to understand the diversity of life.
Our hands-on approach ensures that science lessons are both engaging and educational, sparking curiosity and critical thinking in every student.
