Implementation statement
At St. Mary’s, Science is taught weekly across all year groups, with lessons delivered by class teachers. The curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring that children are taught key scientific knowledge and concepts appropriate for their age.
Our approach focuses on providing clear progression in scientific understanding from Year 1 through to Year 6. Teachers plan lessons that build on previous learning and ensure that students develop a solid foundation in scientific knowledge and skills.
Science lessons incorporate a variety of resources to enhance learning and cater to the diverse needs of our students. These may include practical activities, scientific investigations, and real-world examples, helping to bring scientific concepts to life. In each lesson, we ensure that pupils are exposed to key scientific vocabulary, understand the work of relevant scientists, and engage with practical activities that support their learning.
Pupils are given regular opportunities to observe, question, explore, and investigate. They develop the skills necessary to make predictions, use equipment safely, plan and conduct experiments, and reflect on their findings. Cross-curricular links are made wherever possible, integrating Science with other subjects to deepen understanding and make learning more meaningful.
To further inspire a love of Science, we provide additional opportunities outside of the classroom, such as gardening and science clubs, where pupils can engage in hands-on activities and explore their curiosity further.
Science in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In the Early Years, children are introduced to scientific concepts through the “Understanding the World” (UW) area of the curriculum. Reception pupils are assessed against the Development Matters criteria at the beginning of the year and progress towards the Early Years Profile by the end of the Reception year. Through engaging activities, children develop their curiosity about the world, learning basic scientific principles as part of their exploration of their environment.
At St. Mary’s, we aim to foster a deep curiosity about the world around us and equip pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to become thoughtful, confident, and capable scientists.
