The MTC check

📢 All About the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) 📢

This year, your child will take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), a national assessment for all Year 4 pupils. Here’s everything you need to know about the MTC, why it’s important, and how you can help support your child’s learning at home.

What is the MTC?

The MTC is an online assessment designed to check children’s recall of their multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. The test is:

  • Quick: It lasts just 5 minutes.
  • Simple: Each child answers 25 questions, with 6 seconds to answer each one.

The goal of the MTC is not to put pressure on children but to ensure they have a strong foundation in multiplication, which is a vital skill in maths and beyond.

Why is Multiplication Recall Important?

Good recall of multiplication facts:

  1. Builds Confidence: Knowing times tables makes more complex maths (e.g., division, fractions, problem-solving) much easier.
  2. Supports Everyday Maths: Multiplication is used in many real-life situations, from shopping to measuring.
  3. Prepares for Future Learning: Multiplication skills are critical as your child progresses through Key Stage 2 and into secondary school.

How Can You Help at Home?

We encourage all Year 4 pupils to practice their times tables regularly at home. Here are some ways to make it fun and effective:

1. Online Resources

  • Times Tables Rock Stars: Your child has a login for this fun and engaging platform. It mimics the MTC format and helps build speed and accuracy.
  • Other apps and websites such as MathsFrame, timestables.co.uk. and  BBC Bitesize.

2. Quick Fire Quizzes

  • Ask your child questions like “What’s 7 x 8?” or “What’s 9 x 6?” during car rides, dinner, or downtime.

3. Multiplication Songs and Games

  • Sing along to multiplication songs or play times tables games like bingo, flashcards, or dice rolls.

4. Daily Practice

  • Encourage 5-10 minutes of daily practice. Consistency is key!

When is the MTC?

The MTC will take place in June. We will ensure your child feels confident and prepared, with lots of practice in class and online.

Thank You for Your Support
